Not hungry for breakfast? What could your body be telling you?
I find that 50% or more of my clients, when we first start working together, tell me they either aren’t hungry for breakfast or they skip it....or coffee is breakfast. BUT then, they are STARVING by mid-day and find themselves eating the rest of the day to make up for lost time. Not to mention, they feel wired but tired, and a bit on edge.
That’s because people in burnout (or adrenal fatigue), with low cortisol wake up drained with no appetite. Most people don’t have enough fuel stored in their liver or muscles for gluconeogenesis to sustain the day's energy needs. In this case, if they don’t eat enough, they are basically stressing their adrenal glands further to sustain a sympathetic tone, in order to make that energy that the liver does not have.
While fasting seems to become more and more trendy, most people are not metabolically capable of doing it successfully. Food is FUEL. In burnout, you have to EAT ENOUGH every single day to build back your reserves. You also need to REMINERALIZE, and this isn’t just getting more minerals. It’s getting the right balance of minerals, absorbing them, and actually retaining them. This is so that they are on reserve when you are in need.......instead of constantly using them up and draining them back out.
This means you need to create a lifestyle that NOURISHES your body, and shifts away from the lifestyle that got you into burnout in the first place.
If you have low morning energy along with no appetite, try starting your morning with 1/2 tsp sea salt in a glass of water. Or, eat some sea salt directly on your tongue and sip water, eat and sip, and repeat until you have eaten 1/2 tsp of the sea salt. It will kick start your energy, prep your digestion, and pick your adrenals up off the floor.
Then, have at least a small breakfast to additionally kickstart your energy and give your adrenals a break. One simple way to start getting food (fuel) into your morning is by adding food to your coffee. For example, adding a protein source, such as collagen powder and a healthy fat source, such as coconut oil or MCT oil. For more ideas on how to make your morning coffee more nutrient dense so that you can give your body real FUEL as opposed to just the cortisol rush from the caffeine that stimulates your adrenals, check out some ideas I laid out in this post HERE.
Wishing you health and happiness for the year ahead!
